Emergency Information

With the recent flooding in Seal Beach and loss of power, it is a reminder that we should all try to be prepared in the case of an emergency.

Most important is to stay informed. Make sure to sign up for Nixle (text the zip code “90740” to “888777” on your cell phone) and OCAlert so you get notified of important information in your area. See details at the bottom of this page.

In the event of an earthquake, do not disconnect your gas line unless you smell gas. I learned this tip recently from Wink Chase at our Neighbor 4 Neighbor event. It could take days to weeks to get it turned back on and you may need your gas for cooking and heat.

Do not run outside. Duck and cover under a desk or other furniture if possible.

Another good idea is to have a radio with batteries or that you can wind up so you can get news if the power is out.

Emergency Notification Systems

AlertOC is a mass notification system used by the City of Seal Beach and Seal Beach
Police Department to issue government related messages to residents and businesses.
All residential and commercial landline phone numbers are a part of the AlertOC
system. AlertOC replaced the old “Reverse 911” system. Residents can register
additional cell phone numbers, text numbers and e-mail addresses at AlertOC.com.

Additionally, the City of Seal Beach uses the “NIXLE” communications system to send
non-emergency messages. You can receive alerts from the City of Seal Beach by
texting the zip code “90740” to “888777”. Doing this will enroll you in the NIXLE system
and you will receive alerts and messages. Go to http://www.nixle.com/ for more
information.
